SLAB ON GRADE FOUNDATION

Slab on grade (SOG) foundations utilize a slab of concrete set into a mold in the ground. The mold keeps the slab in place as there is no space between the ground and the structure. SOG is not a good choice for buildings with annual freezing/thawing seasons, but in places like Florida it makes for a solid foundation.

SOG FAQ

Is SOG a good foundation for all environments?

No. The land should be carefully assessed before using SOG. Flood zones and areas prone to sinking should be avoided.

Can electricity or ducts be installed under SOG?

Because SOG lacks a basement or crawl space, utilities cannot be run underneath it.

Can I expand a SOG foundation?

While technically possible, it comes with challenges. We recommend SOG for buildings not intended for expansions.

Will SOG become unlevel?

It is a common problem for SOG foundations to become unlevel as soil settles. This is usually due to poor implementation by the contractor or building in an area unsuitable for SOG.

Does SOG insulate well?

SOG tends to cause heat loss due to the thin slab and the soil acting as a heat sink. In regions with cold winters, slab on grade foundations should not be used anyway, so heat loss is usually not a major drawback.
