WHY USE CONCRETE FOR FOUNDATIONS?
In the 20th century, many buildings were built with stone foundations. While stone foundations are attractive, they present major problems when it comes to waterproofing and longevity. These buildings may have been solid when they were first built, but you won't find many level rooms in those buildings today!
Concrete foundations provide superior structural integrity and concrete basements are much easier to keep waterproofed. What type of concrete foundation you use depends on the site location, design goals, and budget.
Types of Concrete Foundations:
Slabs
The most basic form of a concrete foundation is a slab. In Florida, slab on grade is an excellent choice, but in northern states where the ground freezes a t-shaped or frost protected foundation must be used.
CMU
Concrete masonry units (CMU) make excellent basement walls. Although they do not provide the best installation, properly installed CMU foundations make for a solid choice.
Cast in Place
Cast in place foundations require more labor to build molds for the concrete, but is one of the most common methods for a reason. They can be erected quickly and provide great strength and waterproofing capabilities. The insulated concrete method can also be used for the best weatherproofing.
Pre-Cast Concrete
Concrete panels can be used to quickly erect a basement foundation. These panels have the advantage of being pre-stressed, but the can present waterproofing challenges.

What is the best concrete foundation?
As with most construction methods, it will depend on the site, climate, and design goals. Every method of construction has its advantages and disadvantages.
What foundation provides the best insulation?
A basement foundation using insulated concrete method will provide the best insulation for a building.
What type of foundation is the least expensive?
Slab on grade foundations provide the most economical concrete foundations.
Are there foundation methods other than concrete?
Stone masonry used to be commonly used, but rarely is today. Pier foundations are used in coastal areas, but they will require concrete for the load-bearing points. Crawl space foundations typically lack any concrete slab, but will use concrete masonry units for the walls. Wood foundations also exist for very small buildings.
What are the drawbacks to a full basement?
Primarily cost, both in construction and maintenance.
