WHAT IS HOLLOW CORE CONCRETE?
Hollow core slabs allow for quickly assembling concrete floors with the same strength as solid slabs, but at a greatly reduced weight. Typically, hollow core slabs are used to construct the floors of multi-level units such as apartment buildings. The slabs are precast and prestressed, meaning they can be quickly installed when they arrive on the worksite.
ADVANTAGES OF HOLLOW CORE SLABS
Reduced weight
The tublar voids in the hollow core slab can reduce weight by as much as 50%. This reduces construction costs and reduces the total weight the structure must bear.
Efficiency
Hollow core slabs can be installed much quicker than cast-in-situ slabs. Because they are pre-fabricated, they arrive ready for installation.
Functional
The tublar voids can be used to run electrical or mechanical services. They also greatly reduce sound transmission and vibrations.

What are the dimensions of hollow-core slabs?
Standard hollow core slabs come in standard 4' sections with 8", 12", or 12½" thicknesses. Other dimensions can be achieved depending on the manufacturer.
Are hollow core slabs complete floors?
Usually a finishing is installed on top of the hollow core slab, such as a cast-in-place concrete topping. This provides a smooth floor surface and functions as a horizontal diaphragm.
How are the slabs made?
The slabs are made offsite in a factory environment in batches.
Should hollow core be use for balconies?
For balconies, typically a solid slab would be used or the tubular voids would be filled. This is to avoid water infilitration and subsequent freeze/thaw damage.
Can hollow core be used for parking structures?
Absolutely! With the proper installation procedures, hollow core slabs can be ideal for large parts of parking structures.
