WHAT IS POST-TENSION SLAB CONCRETE?
The post-tension method combines the tensile strength of steel with the compression strength of concrete. Post-tension slabs utilize steel "tendons" that are pre-stressed using tension while pre-stressing the concrete using compression. The tendons are in ducts that run through the concrete and then anchored to either end. This technique results in much stronger concrete slabs that resist cracking and breaking.

What type of buildings use post-tension slab?
Post-tension slabs can be used for many types of buildings. Even with residential homes, post-tension slabs can prevent ground shift and cracking. However, post-tension concrete becomes more of a necessity with larger structures, as it reduces weight, enhances strength, and reduces size.
Do post-tension slabs require maintenance?
It was once believed that post-tension slabs were maintenance free but time has shown that not to be the case. Especially in coastal areas, corrosion has resulted in post-tension structures requiring maintenance. Proper installation should prevent corrosion issues, but structures should still be routinely inspected.
Do post-tension slabs use more materials than other methods?
Although the construction photos make post-tension slabs look like they use a lot of materials, they allow for much thinner slabs and therefore greatly reduce total construction materials.
What is the environmental impact of post-tension slabs?
Because post-tension slabs utilize much less concrete than other construction methods, they also greatly reduce the caron impact of the structure. Post-tension slab structures also have much greater longevity.
