WHAT IS TILT-UP CONCRETE?

Tilt-up or tilt-wall concrete is a process that allows for quickly erecting concrete buildings. It consists of three simple steps. According to the American Concrete Institute, tilt-up concrete is "a construction technique for casting concrete elements in a horizontal position at the job site and then tilting them to their final position in a structure."

TILT-WALL CONCRETE FAQ

How thick are tilt-up concrete panels?

Typically 5½" – 7¼" before reinforcing.

What site conditions are required for tilt-wall concrete?

Tilt-wall is more favorable for sites with plenty of space. Confined spaces do not necessarily make tilt-up concrete impossible, but they can present challenges. Setting up cranes and casting the panels make take longer in confined spaces.

Can tilt-up concrete be used for multi-story buildings?

Absolutely. Usually tilt-up concrete is used for buildings between 1–7 stories, so only for exceptionally large structures will tilt-up be unfeasible.

What type of buildings use tilt-wall concrete?

All sorts! Showrooms, factories, warehouses, and offices are the most common.

What holds tilt-up walls in place?

The panels themselve are usually not connected to allow for expansion and contraction. The roof holds the panels in place from the top and a curb at the footing holds the bottom.
